Poultry market size in Ghana

Recent estimates suggest that Ghana consumes roughly 300,000-400,000 metric tonnes of poultry meat annually, making it one of the largest-        poultry markets in West Africa after Nigeria.

According to the USDA's Ghana Poultry Update:

Total chicken meat consumption in 2024 is estimated at about 340,000 tonnes.

Domestic chicken meat production is forecast at approximately 70,000 tonnes.

Imports account for around 270,000 tonnes, meaning imports supply nearly 80% of the market.

This is important from a business perspective because it shows a substantial gap between local production and local demand.

    How many birds are there?

There is no single official current count of all live poultry in Ghana, but we can estimate:

     Broilers (meat chickens)

Industry sources indicate that replacing 100,000 tonnes of imported chicken would require raising roughly 67 million broiler birds annually.

   Food agribusiness

Given total chicken consumption of around 340,000 tonnes, annual meat demand corresponds to approximately:

150-230 million broiler chickens processed per year depending on average dressed weight and production systems (rough estimation based on 1.5-2.2 kg meat per bird).

   Total poultry population

The standing population at any given moment is much smaller than annual throughput because broilers are slaughtered after 6-8 weeks. Including: commercial broilers, layer hens, backyard chickens, guinea fowl, ducks, and other poultry, a reasonable industry estimate would place Ghana's live poultry population at roughly 40-60 million birds at any one time.

This aligns with Ghana's population (~35 million people) and the size of its egg and chicken industries. The exact number varies seasonally and by production cycle.

 Egg market

 Egg production is also significant:

Ghana produced about 74,000 tonnes of eggs in 2023.

 Food agribusiness

This implies many millions of layer hens in commercial and smallholder production systems.

 Quick business takeaway

For an entrepreneur or investor, the key fact is not the exact bird count but the supply deficit:

   Indicator Approximate value

   Poultry meat consumption 300,000-400,000 t/year

   Domestic production 70,000 t/year

   Imports 225,000-270,000 t/year

    Local market share 20-25%

Estimated broilers consumed annually 150-230 million birds

Estimated live poultry population 40-60 million birds
